Looking for a BMW navigation update, but don’t know which system is installed in your car? Over the years BMW has used several types of navigation: from CDs in the boot to an internal hard disk drive (HDD) in CIC and NBT systems. Each of them requires different maps and a different update method.

Below you will find how to identify your system (iDrive I, iDrive II, Business, CCC Professional, CIC, NBT), which countries the map sets cover and which models they are intended for. For car navigation enquiries there is a separate phone line, whose number is given on the page – call it and tell us the model and year of manufacture.

Most common BMW navigation problems

Besides outdated maps, drivers often ask about other navigation issues. Below are general explanations; only an inspection can determine the exact cause.

BMW navigation shows an old map

The map version is outdated: it does not show new roads, roundabouts and bypasses.

What you can check yourself: In the „About maps” menu item, check the map version.

The maps are updated according to the system type (CD, DVD or internal HDD).

BMW navigation does not read the disc

Most often the cause is a scratched or unsuitable disc, the wrong disc type or a worn reading mechanism.

What you can check yourself: Check that the disc is clean and whether the navigation unit in the boot is marked CD or DVD.

The system and the disc are inspected to determine whether the problem is in the disc or in the unit.

BMW navigation shows only arrows, without a map

Business navigation in pre-LCI cars shows only arrows and does not display a 2D map – this is a characteristic of this system.

What you can check yourself: Check whether your car is pre-LCI or LCI (year of manufacture).

According to the source data, the b3v2 set is also suitable for pre-LCI cars with software updated by the dealer.

There is no map of Lithuania in the navigation

A set is being used whose country list does not include Lithuania (e.g., b3 Business M-ASK I).

What you can check yourself: Check which map version and set are installed.

A set is selected in which Lithuania is shown in detail.

Which BMW navigation system is installed in your car?

Before updating the maps, the most important thing is to know the system type, not just the model. The same 3 Series body can have different navigation depending on the year of manufacture and equipment.

Below are the system types with codes b1–b5 (the Business system has two variants, b3 and b3v2) and the models they are intended for:

  • b1 – iDrive I (NAVI01 MK1–MK4), CD. The disc is inserted in the boot. Suitable for 3er 2003–2007, 5er 1995–2003, 7er 1993–2007, X3 up to 2007, X5 1999–2008, M5 up to 2007, Z4 2002–2009, Z8 2000–2003.
  • b2 – iDrive II (NAVI02/NAVI03), DVD. The navigation unit is also in the boot; the unit is marked CD or DVD, and if DVD is not indicated, it is a CD. Suitable for 3er 2002–2007, 5er 2002–2003, 7er 2001–2007, X3 2001–2007, X5 1999–2008, Z4 2002–2009, Z8 2000–2003.
  • b3 – Business (M-ASK I), pre-LCI, DVD. Intended for BMWs before the facelift (2003–2007) with Business navigation, which shows only arrows, without a 2D map.
  • b3v2 – Business (M-ASK II), LCI, DVD. Intended for original facelift models (2007–2010), which show a 2D map in addition to arrows, as well as for pre-LCI cars in which the dealer has updated the software to display the 2D map.
  • b4 – CCC Professional, DVD. Large screen, three map discs. Intended for cars from 2004: 1er, 3er, 5er and 6er up to 2008, X5 up to 2009, X6.
  • b5 – CIC (Premium, Motion, Move) and NBT, HDD. The maps are updated on the internal drive. Models listed in the source: 1er (E81/E82/E87/E88/F20/F21/F52), 3er (E90–E93, F30/F31/F34/F35), 5er (E60/E61/F07/F10/F11/F18/G30), 6er (E63/E64/F06/F12/F13), 7er (F01–F04, G11/G12), X3 (F25/F20), X5 (E70/F15), X6 (E71/E72/F85/F86).

You can see the system version in the navigation itself – the „About maps” menu item shows the exact map version. Please give this information when you call.

Which maps are loaded: Lithuania and Europe

The map set depends on the system. For b5 (CIC and NBT with HDD), the internal drive is updated, and the maps cover: Lithuania (in detail), Germany, Austria, Andorra, Belgium, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Spain, France, Finland, Liechtenstein, the United Kingdom, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Monaco, Norway, the Netherlands, Portugal, San Marino, Sweden, the Vatican, Russia, Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Belarus, Estonia and Latvia.

For older systems, the maps are split across several discs. CCC Professional (b4) uses three DVDs, and iDrive I (b1) uses 13 CDs. One detail is worth noting: the country list of the b3 (Business M-ASK I) set does not include Lithuania, while the b3v2, b2, b4 and b5 sets include Lithuania in detail.

  • CCC Professional, DVD1: Ireland, Andorra, Belgium, Great Britain, Gibraltar, Spain, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Portugal, France and Europe’s main roads.
  • CCC Professional, DVD2: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, San Marino, Slovenia, Switzerland, the Vatican, Germany and Europe’s main roads.
  • CCC Professional, DVD3: Albania, Belarus, Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania (in detail), Norway, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland, Sweden, Ukraine, Hungary and Europe’s main roads.
  • iDrive I, CD3: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania (in detail); CD13 – maps of Europe’s main roads.

If you often travel to a specific country, check whether it is in your system’s set list. If you are unsure, you can ask by phone.

Is it worth updating your BMW navigation?

Outdated maps do not show new roundabouts, bypasses and highway sections, so the navigation may guide you along an old road or take a long time to recalculate the route. If the system works properly, updating the maps is a logical first step.

You can find out more about how satellite navigation works in the article How a GPS navigation system works. For more general information about map updates, see the page navigation map updates.

How a BMW navigation update works

  1. Identify the system. Check the „About maps” version and, if you have iDrive I or II, the CD/DVD label on the unit in the trunk.
  2. Contact us by phone. Call the car navigation phone line and tell us the model, year of manufacture and system version.
  3. Agree on the set and price. The suitable map set is selected according to the system type, and the price is given.
  4. Come to a branch. Our branches in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and Šiauliai are open Mon–Fri 9:00–18:00.

Frequently asked questions about BMW navigation updates

How much does a BMW navigation update cost?

The price depends on the system type (CD, DVD or HDD) and the map set. A specialist will give you the exact amount once they know your model and year of manufacture.

How can I find out which version is installed in my BMW navigation?

In the navigation menu, open the „About maps” item – it shows the exact map version. In older systems (iDrive I and II), the type is indicated by the CD or DVD label on the unit in the trunk.

Is the same update suitable for the F10 and F11?

The 5er F10 and F11 models are among the cars for which the b5 set (CIC / NBT with HDD) is intended. Nevertheless, it is worth checking the exact system type by VIN or system version before choosing an update.

Can the navigation of the BMW F30 and X3 F25 be updated?

Most often yes: the 3er F30 and X3 F25 are listed among the b5 system models. We will confirm whether it suits your car based on the model and year of manufacture.

What is the difference between BMW E60 and E91 navigation discs?

Cars of the same models from different years may have different systems: earlier ones have CCC Professional with three DVDs, later ones have CIC with HDD. A disc does not fit a different system, so the system is identified first.
