Most common home appliance faults
Here we have gathered the symptoms people most often come to us with when seeking home appliance repair. Before bringing in the device, it is worth performing a few simple checks.
Non-working home appliance: the device does not respond when switched on
Most often the cause is a damaged power cord, a faulty switch or a blown fuse part. In rarer cases, the fault is in the electronic board.
What you can check yourself: Try a different socket, check that the plug and cord are undamaged and that the household fuse has not tripped. Do not disassemble the device yourself.
We diagnose whether the cord, switch or board is at fault and replace the damaged part. Simpler jobs cost from €15.
Vacuum cleaner has weak suction or gets hot
Most often the filters, hose or brush are clogged, and sometimes the motor is worn out. A blocked air path causes the motor to overheat.
What you can check yourself: Empty the dust container, wash or replace the filters and check whether there is a blockage in the hose.
We clear the air path and replace motor parts or the switch. You can find more on the page about vacuum cleaner repair, price from €20.
Coffee machine does not dispense water or coffee
The most common cause is limescale deposits, clogged channels or a worn-out pump. Hard water speeds up this fault.
What you can check yourself: Check that the water tank is properly inserted, and fill it. Empty the coffee grounds container if it is badly clogged.
We descale and flush the machine from €15, and replace the pump or heater from €25. For more information, see the coffee machine repair page.
The iron does not heat up or does not produce steam
The most common causes are limescale in the steam vents, a burnt-out heating element or a faulty thermostat. A damaged cord is also a frequent problem.
What you can check yourself: Check that there is water and select the appropriate temperature. Use the water recommended by the manufacturer.
We replace the thermostat, the cord or the heating part. See iron repair, price from €15.
The robot vacuum cleaner does not charge or gets stuck
The problem is often a worn-out battery, dirty sensors or a brush with something wound around it. Sometimes the wheel motor is at fault.
What you can check yourself: Wipe the sensors and charging contacts with a dry cloth and remove hair from the brush. Do not disassemble the battery.
We diagnose the battery, sensors and motors and replace the faulty part. Price from €30; for more information, see robot vacuum cleaner repair.
The TV does not turn on or there is no picture
The most common culprits are the power supply unit, the backlight or the mainboard. A fault may occur after a voltage surge.
What you can check yourself: Unplug the TV from the socket for a few minutes and check the remote control and HDMI cables. Do not attempt any internal checks yourself.
We identify the location of the fault and offer a repair. Price from €35; for more information, see the TV repair page.
The sewing machine does not sew or skips stitches
The most common causes are an unsuitable needle type, a clogged mechanism or incorrect thread tension. Sometimes the motor wears out.
What you can check yourself: Replace the needle, re-thread the machine and brush away lint around the bobbin case.
We clean, lubricate and adjust the mechanism and replace worn parts. Price from €20; for more information, see sewing machine repair.
The speaker or amplifier crackles or is quiet
The most common causes are oxidized connectors, faulty speakers or the amplifier board. Overheating can also be the reason.
What you can check yourself: Replace the cable, try another source and check that the volume has not been turned down on the device itself.
We clean the connectors, replace the speakers or repair the amplifier. Price from €25; for more information, see audio equipment repair.
The camera does not focus or shows an error
The problem is often the lens mechanism, dirt or an impact. An error can also be caused by a worn contact.
What you can check yourself: Turn the camera off and on again, insert a different memory card and wipe the lens with a soft cloth.
We diagnose the mechanics and electronics, and we discuss the repair price in advance. For more information, see camera repair.

Is it worth repairing a household appliance, or should you buy a new one?
A simple rule: if the repair costs less than half the price of a similar new appliance, repairing it usually pays off. For example, replacing a worn-out pump in a coffee machine or a cleaning brush on a robot vacuum costs far less than a whole new appliance.
Repair makes less sense when the appliance is old, cheap and has already broken down more than once, or when spare parts are hard to find. In that case, diagnostics helps you learn the real situation: the technician tells you what has failed, how much it would cost, and whether the repaired appliance will last a long time.
It is worth thinking about the decision more broadly, too. A well-repaired appliance does not end up in a landfill, while new models, especially cheap ones, sometimes break down sooner than older ones. On the other hand, if you need the latest features, repair may not be the best choice.
- A cost of up to roughly half the price of a new appliance – it is usually worth repairing.
- More expensive models (coffee machines, robot vacuum cleaners, TVs) are repaired more often than cheap ones.
- If the fault keeps recurring, ask the technician to check whether the problem lies in the main board or the motor.
Bring your receipt or warranty card as well: if the appliance is still covered by the seller’s warranty, it is worth contacting the seller first.
How to extend the lifespan of your household appliances
Most faults can be avoided with simple maintenance. The most common causes are dust, limescale and overheating, rather than some rare component.
Filters and brushes of vacuum cleaners and robot vacuums must be cleaned regularly, because a clogged air path overheats the motor. Coffee machines and irons should be descaled, especially if the water is hard and tap water is what you use most often. Sewing machines should be cleaned of thread lint from time to time and lubricated according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Do not use an appliance with a damaged cord or plug.
- Keep TVs and audio equipment in a well-ventilated place, not in a closed-in cabinet.
- After a storm or power surges, unplug appliances if the fault appeared suddenly.
- When moving or transporting equipment, use the original or sturdy packaging. We write more about this in our article on moving expensive electronics.
If you notice an unusual smell, noise or spark, stop using the appliance and unplug it. That way a minor fault does not grow into a major one.
