Sand, moisture and drops: when repair is worthwhile
Grains of sand can get into the lens rings, the zoom mechanism or around the shutter, and moisture can leave oxidation on the board. The sooner the camera is checked, the lower the chance that the fault will spread.

If the camera is old and the repair would cost about the same as a new model, think it over. But first find out what has actually failed – sometimes the cause is simpler than it seems.
